With the “Mountains” series, Ugo Rondinone has created a series of 27 of his mountain sculptures. The series is one of his most famous works. They combine the look of geological formations and abstract compositions, consisting of boulders stacked vertically in groups of two. They began with a monumental work in the Nevada desert in 2011. Since then, a number of these works have been created around the world in public spaces as well as smaller works for interiors. With them, the artist draws on the land art movement of the 1960s and expands it to include crucial contemporary influences from pop art and comic culture. Each stone is painted a different Day-Glo colour.
