Izumi Kato - Untitled 3 and Untitled 4 - 2023/2024

Izumi Kato has built his own unique worldview through a variety of expressive methods, including painting, sculpture, and lithography. This time, the second installment of the new UKIYO-E series, "Untitled 3" and "Untitled 4," has been completed through a collaboration between Izumi Kato and traditional woodblock printing. The works are based on the original artwork, in which a delicate bird illustration on a vintage plastic model box is collaged with Kato's two-dimensional work.

Kato's plastic model series was widely promoted during the stay-at-home period during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kato said he was particularly attracted to the warm illustrations on the boxes of vintage plastic models. "Untitled 3" and "Untitled 4" were produced using the traditional woodblock printing techniques that gave birth to ukiyo-e, and the original artwork, which combines the illustration on the box of the plastic model with Kato's unique figures, which are primitive yet full of vitality.
